Hessie Poe Obituary

Mrs. Hessie McRae Poe was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina on September 19, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Mary McRae and James McRae. Early in life she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a dedicated member of St. Peters AME Zion Church in Clio, South Carolina. She attended faithfully until her health declined. She would also sing on the choir. Mrs. Poe would also attend Old Clio United Methodist Church in Clio from time to time. Her education was received in the public schools of Marlboro County. She was employed at Dundee Nursing Home in Bennettsville, SC as a Housekeeper and she retired after 30 years of service. Mrs. Poe was a delightful person that was filled with positive energy. She had a smile that would light up a room when she entered. She was also dedicated to her family and they were dedicated to her. Her marriage was to the late Eddie Lucius Poe. She was a skilled cook and enjoyed preparing delicious dishes. Hessie was the youngest and last of 14 children born to her parents. She was preceded in death by her son: Ernest Lee McRae, Sr. "Pete" and her grandchildren: Dwana Y. McRae and Ernest McRae, Jr. On Sunday, January 21, 2024 while at Cheraw Healthcare located in Cheraw, South Carolina, Mrs. Hessie McRae Poe responded to the voice of God only she heard summoning her to come to Him. She transitioned while in the presence of her loving and devoted daughter, Velvin, son-in-law, Fred, Jr. and granddaughter, Brandi. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, but not limited to: her daughters, Velvin D. Miles (Fred) and Betty Jean Hicks; her grandchildren: Brandi Ramsey (Shawn), Denita Hicks, Damien Hicks, Dwight Hicks, Cheryl L. McRae and Andre Littles (Renee); 14 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Sophronia B. McRae; two sisters-in-law, Doris P. Galloway and Earline Dupree; a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends. Tributes maybe posted at Quicksfuneralhome.com or on Facebook at Quick's Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024- 1:00 p.m. at Old Clio United Methodist Church -2660 Hwy 9- Clio, SC 29525 with burial in Ideal Cemetery in Bennettsville, SC. Those in attendance are asked to wear facial masks.
